This course is a continuation of our in-depth exploration of the Mahayana Buddhist path in the Tibetan Kagyu and Nyingma traditions. Building upon the understanding of the views and practices of the three yanas, this course will focus on the practice of Shamatha-Vipashyana – the main type of meditation in the Mahayana. We will examine different presentations on the fundamental aspects of these two practices, and their union, as a way of exploring how to deepen our own meditation practice. Selected readings will be from a number of the major meditation teachers of the Kagyu-Nyingma tradition including the Buddha, Kamalashila, Jamgon Kongtrul, Thrangu Rinpoche, Tsoknyi Rinpoche, Mingyur Rinopche, Alan Wallace, Ken McLeod, and others, as well as Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche.

This course is designed for those who have been practicing meditation within the Kagyu-Nyingma traditions for a number of years and want to understand the basics more deeply and experience how those basics inform the deeper levels of the practice.

We consider this to be an intermediate level course so we recommend the following foundation to those wanting to participate: study of the sourcebooks for WMC’s foundational curriculum known as either The Way of the Buddha or Walking in the Footsteps of the Buddha, or a comparable level of study and practice: please consult with the course facilitator using this link.
